Junichi Hakose Biography
“At the age of 20, I studied maki-e under a maki-e master and became independent five years later.
Since then, I have been making things that I enjoy from my heart.
When gorgeous maki-e lacquerware were at their height, I dared to make plain lacquerware. When others around me started to make plain lacquerware, I expressed myself with maki-e.
I am a contrarian type of a person, but I am here today because I have people who support me despite my nature. I would like to continue my work freely as I can and in times, live in defiance of the times.”

1955 Born in Wajima City
1975 Studied under Mr. Masaru Tanaka, a Maki-e Master
1980 Selected at the Japan New Craft Exhibition and four other times
1989 Selected for Nitten
1992 The highest prize of Wajima City Art Exhibition
1993 New Craft Prize, Japan New Craft Exhibition
1994 Grand Prize, The Hakone Open-Air Museum, New Craft Exhibition for Opening the Future
